Not much room for error in this event, as each cowboy carries one rope and is allowed 3 throws.
A good time is under 7 seconds in this event. This team event in professional rodeo has a ranch origin. To treat injuries, change brands, or brand new stock, the cowboys often had to rope animals. Quickness and skill with a rope were necessary attributes for cowboys involved in roping. It takes two skilled ropers in this event: the header ropes first and must catch either around both horns, around one horn and the head, or around the neck; and the heeler has to rope both hind legs. If the heeler catches only one foot, the team is assessed a 5 second penalty. After the animal is caught, both horses must be turned so that they face each other to "shape the steer". http://www.codystampederodeo.com/tickets.cfm
