Steer Wrestling

Under 5 seconds is a good time in this event.

The quickest event in rodeo is steer wrestling. Invented by African American cowboy Bill Pickett while working with Buffalo in the 101 Ranch Wild West show, the event is almost 100 years old.

Brute strength and leverage are the principles on which success in this event are based. The steer weighs twice as much as the average cowboy. When the steer busts from the chute, the hazer keeps him close to the bulldogger. As the bulldogger eases in beside the steer, he slides down from his saddle, hooks his arm around the steer's horn, grasps the other horn, and using his strength and leverage wrestles the animal to the ground. The cowboy's work is done when all four of the animal's feet face upward.
